Sister Act has been in the habit of making us laugh for more than 20 years. First came the 1992 screwball film with Whoopi Goldberg as the sassy singer turned nun on the run. Then the musical adaptation developed at the Alliance Theatre and Pasadena Playhouse during the 2006-2007 season. Now after London and Broadway engagements, the tale of murder witness Deloris Van Cartier is on a national tour, which is playing the Fox Theatre through Sunday.
Sister Act to Bring ‘Divine’ Musical Comedy To Fox Theatre
Apr 23, 2013 | AtlantaDailyWorld.com
The musical theater version of the 1990s cult film Sister Act will bring singing nuns and gangsters to the Fox Theatre stage April 23-28. The musical features original music by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, who also wrote music for Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Little Shop of Horrors.
Chatting with performing artists is always an enjoyable experience. Charles Barksdale will appear in Sister Act, at the Fox Theatre, April 23-28. He performed in several locations Nationwide and made his Canadian Concert debut in November of 2011. He studied Vocal Performance and Music Education at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He has performed on the Operatic and Musical Theatre stages and is currently an avid performer on both.
Even if you’ve seen the 1992 movie Sister Act several times, the musical, now playing at Providence Performing Arts Center April 9−14, will bring something new to the stage. The plot and details may be the same as the film, but imagine every scene set to a song-and-dance number and comedy ensues. The musical received five 2011 Tony Award nominations, is produced by Whoopi Goldberg and directed by Jerry Zaks, and features an original score by Grammy and Golden Globe Award-winning composer Alan Menken.
Disco music in a church? In a convent? Nuns hiding murder witness? These do not sound like plot points of a Broadway musical. SISTER ACT, though, tied all of these together with witty banter, great characters, and hummable "fabulous" songs when it opened at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday night.
E. Clayton Cornelious has been either on Broadway or on tour almost continuously since he left Pittsburgh for good, but his musical theater career had not brought him back to Pittsburgh as a performer until now, when he arrives with the national company of Sister Act.
A surprise theatrical miracle has slipped into town, complete with enough “Hallelujahs” and “Hosannas” to fuel a city’s worth of churches. The touring company of Sister Act, a musical that has levitated from the popular 1992 film to the London stage to a Broadway run, has come down to earth at the Boston Opera House to bring a welcome bit of warmth to our cold, cold town. Whoopi Goldberg who starred in the original movie is one of the show’s producers.
For Ta'Rea Campbell, Sister Act is demanding and fulfilling
January 18, 2013 | The Sun Chronicle
Ta'Rea Campbell's career in musical theater is the stuff of which dreams are made. She has performed on Broadway in musicals including The Lion King, Aida and The Book of Mormon, as well as in numerous national tours. Campbell's latest project has her cast as the lead in the Tony-nominated Sister Act, coming Jan. 22 to Boston's Opera House for a 12-day run.
Confession: Bless me, the nun-themed Sister Act is sinfully good. Maybe even habit-forming. This Broadway touring show, which opened Tuesday for an eight-show run at the Peace Center, soars on the strength of its genially irreverent script and exuberant gospel-inflected music, performed by a first-rate cast.
Sister Act's Ernie Pruneda : "It's All About The Journey"
January 15, 2013 | EDGE Boston
Ernie Pruneda begins laughing as soon as he launches into a description of his role as Pablo, one of three henchmen in Sister Act, which originated as a movie and has been transformed into a hit musical. It plays in Boston as part of the Broadway in Boston series, at the Opera House, from Jan. 22-Feb. 3, 2013.
Unsullied by a profound or interesting idea - and deftly skirting spirituality almost entirely - Sister Act is a joyous affirmation that boogying and becoming a superstar are far better life choices than being dead or praying and becoming a nun. Not that there's anything wrong about vowing chastity, embracing poverty, or betrothing yourself to Jesus.
When Douglas Carter Beane first saw the British production of Sister Act, he knew it needed some major surgery. Beane, a veteran Broadway playwright, had traveled to London on Halloween in 2010 to doctor a show that was bleeding green.
God was the first of all composers and conductors: The Lord told Job that, at the laying of the foundations of the Earth, “The morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.” (I guess that makes him the first critic, too.)

It was a miracle that actress Victoria Clark, who plays Mother Superior in the musical "Sister Act," found Mother Dolores Hart. Two decades ago, Mother Dolores, a Hollywood actress turned Benedictine nun, was pursued by screenwriter Paul Rudnick for inspiration on what would become the 1992 movie "Sister Act." Mr. Rudnick never found her, and though her life bears resemblance to that of the main character in the film (and now the musical), Deloris Van Cartier, she did not, in fact, provide that inspiration.

A Nun, Two, Three! Sister Act Opens On Broadway April 20
April 20, 2011 | Playbill.com
Following a 2009 London premiere, the disco musical Sister Act is born again in New York City. The retooled Broadway production, featuring a score by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, new direction by Jerry Zaks and an updated book by Douglas Carter Beane, officially opens April 20 at the Broadway Theatre.
The show is an adaptation of the 1992 film in which Whoopi Goldberg played a Reno lounge singer, Deloris Van Cartier, who becomes a murder witness and hides out in a convent, where she teaches the nuns to sing new versions of oldies like "Shout." But the musical's composer, Alan Menken (an eight-time Academy Award winner), and lyricist, Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid on Broadway, Tangled on film), wanted their songs to take a different direction. "I had already done a show with R&B and Motown," said Mr. Menken, referring to his 1982 off-Broadway hit Little Shop of Horrors. "And I really didn't want to be in the same territory as the movie."
For Broadway Shows, Group Ticket Agents Still Sell Seats
April 18, 2011 | The New York Times
Take Group Sales Box Office, founded in 1960 and today one of the most profitable group ticket agencies on Broadway. The company projects sales in excess of $30 million this year, with Sister Act (its current top seller with groups) accounting for more than $1 million in tickets so far. Located just off Times Square and across the street from the Broadway revival of Tom Stoppard's Arcadia (a show that has not been a group magnet for them), the company and its 22 sales agents may still be version 1.0 in Broadway discounting and promotions, but in terms of results, they are the hare to social networking's turtle. Ticket orders were up 43 percent from Feb. 1 to April 1, compared to the same period in 2010.
Marla Mindelle has delighted musical audiences around the country in such shows as The 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee, and now she is raising her voice on Broadway as Sister Mary Robert in the new musical Sister Act, opposite Patina Miller and Victoria Clark.
