March 28, 2012 | TheaterMania.com
On Tuesday, March 27, Raven-Symoné assumed the lead role of Deloris Van Cartier in Broadway's Sister Act, playing at the Broadway Theatre. Based on the hit film, the show tells the story of a disco diva Deloris who is put in protective custody in a convent after witnessing her gangster boyfriend and his cronies commit a murder.
If anything, the 26-year-old actress Raven-Symoné, who got her start in the late 1980s on "The Cosby Show," knows show business. So when her manager called to say the producers of the musical Sister Act were interested in her taking over the leading role of a lounge singer who hides out in a convent, "All I said was, 'Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes,'" said Ms. Symoné, "I didn't have to think about it. I was driving on the 405 and I said, 'The Whoopi Goldberg movie? Yes!'"
Raven-Symoné on Slipping Into Sister Act, Singing with Mary Poppins and Starting Life in New York
March 26, 2012 | Broadway.com
She’s been a TV star since she was three years old, and now Raven-Symoné is taking on a new challenge, making her Broadway debut as aspiring disco-diva Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act. Broadway.com chatted with Raven-Symoné about her upcoming Rialto debut, her love for Julie Andrews and Janet Jackson, distaste for drama and what she’s loving (and hating!) about life in New York.
Raven begins a scheduled six-month run on Tuesday, but before she hits the stage (and the convent), EW caught up with the performer for a Q&A about the rehearsal process, stage fright and — yes — That’s So Raven.

It was a miracle that actress Victoria Clark, who plays Mother Superior in the musical "Sister Act," found Mother Dolores Hart. Two decades ago, Mother Dolores, a Hollywood actress turned Benedictine nun, was pursued by screenwriter Paul Rudnick for inspiration on what would become the 1992 movie "Sister Act." Mr. Rudnick never found her, and though her life bears resemblance to that of the main character in the film (and now the musical), Deloris Van Cartier, she did not, in fact, provide that inspiration.

A Nun, Two, Three! Sister Act Opens On Broadway April 20
April 20, 2011 | Playbill.com
Following a 2009 London premiere, the disco musical Sister Act is born again in New York City. The retooled Broadway production, featuring a score by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, new direction by Jerry Zaks and an updated book by Douglas Carter Beane, officially opens April 20 at the Broadway Theatre.
The show is an adaptation of the 1992 film in which Whoopi Goldberg played a Reno lounge singer, Deloris Van Cartier, who becomes a murder witness and hides out in a convent, where she teaches the nuns to sing new versions of oldies like "Shout." But the musical's composer, Alan Menken (an eight-time Academy Award winner), and lyricist, Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid on Broadway, Tangled on film), wanted their songs to take a different direction. "I had already done a show with R&B and Motown," said Mr. Menken, referring to his 1982 off-Broadway hit Little Shop of Horrors. "And I really didn't want to be in the same territory as the movie."

Ticket orders were up 43 percent from Feb. 1 to April 1, compared to the same period in 2010.
